World War II Accountant 

2nd LT. Thomas J. Kelly, FD.  was in charge of payroll on a ship in World War II.  He diligently did his duty until the ship was sunk.  He and the payroll went down with the ship.  He survived; the payroll did not.  After the war ended, a bill from the US government arrived.  He never had to pay the bill - the government understood how it got lost.
